Game Day

The night before a basketball game, my sons set out what they need for the morning. They go to bed early. They wake up, shower, eat a good breakfast, pack extra food for the day, pack their gear, tidy their rooms and leave the house prepared and mentally ready.

They do this because they love the game.

David (Shepherd–then promoted to King) understood game-day:

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season andwhose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1

Game Day Tips:

1. Realize that today is important. Today does matter. Today is worth preparing for and giving your best to. It is not just another day. Today is game day.

2. Find out what you need to feel ready. Ask other people what they do. More sleep? Better food? More silence to gather thoughts? What do you need? What works and what is not working? Be creative and take your own needs seriously.

3. Play hard. If you’re changing diapers, make it a quality diaper change experience! If you’re selling real estate, take extra time with your clients and care for them. Love the game. The more you engage in your day, the more you realize how much it matters and the more you’ll want to be ready for tomorrow.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to think things through, I’d recommend Urban Sanctuary. A small retreat center on the south side of Edmonton (Taylor Seminary Campus).  They have private rooms you can rent for $20 a day with a couch and little fireplace. There is a kitchen, good coffee, library and the river valley just outside the door. If you want someone to talk to, you can book time with a spiritual director during your stay . . . or just have the day to yourself and no one will bother you.

Here’s a link to check it out if you’re interested.
